he Jungle Book is a collection of stories that was written by Rudyard Kippling and published in 1894.The second Jungle Book was published in 1895 and contains a collection of stories that are linked by poems.

The story mostly revolves around Mowgli,an Indian boy who is raised by wolves and other jungle animals. He learns how to be self‐sufficient and how society operates within jungle life.(Britannica,2011)

This excerpt is taken from the beginning of the book.Mowgli has just been discovered by a pack of wolves after being abandoned in the depts of the jungle.

After being brought to safety in the pack's cave, Shere Khan(a Bengal tiger and the book's antagonist) storms into the cave to demand the “man cub.”

It is at this point that mother wolf defends the infant and the excerpt begins.
