Design Decisions
Why this book?
As an adult,I wouldn't really describe myself as bookworm, so no piece of literature really stood out to me that I had read in recent years.I began to reflect on my childhood and what books I had been introduced to in school. The Jungle Book remained fresh in my mind. The memory of this piece of literature was likely reinforced from my repeated viewing of the film as a youngster. With imagery in mind from book and film,I thought I would enjoy trying to present this piece of literature in a fun way.
Fonts
Upon picking this piece of literature,I already had in mind the type of font that would be used for introducing the title and for my headings.I chose Aladin because its playful, chunky letters are easy to read, and I think it represents a child's book really well.Since my heading font is eye–catching and demands the reader's attention,I thought that a more simplistic font would be suitable for the body.I thought that pairing a cursive font with a serif font would distract the reader too much. After reading online about fonts that seem to ease readability for children,I decided to go with Andika.
Colours
My colour selection journey can be seen on the following link to my whimsical page.I wanted to incorporate green into the design to symbolize the forest setting.I chose the forest green for the background because the first part of the excerpt is in a cave.I think the dark gloominess of a cave is best represented with a darker shade of the colour. In keeping with the green theme,I decided to add hints of a brighter green throughout the design for highlighting quotes and character names.I had thought about the tiger in the excerpt, which lead me to introducing the orange colour. The title for the book and the film have traditionally been yellow or gold,so I wanted to carry this through on the web also.I chose an off–white for the body text because the contrast of pure white was too stark against the background colour.
Layout
The layout for most of the site is simple.I decided to have some fun with the layout of the author page through placing each piece of information into circular, floating divs.I thought that this would make the facts about the author more memorable.I placed a dotted hr half–way throughout the story page,to indicate to the reader that the scene in the book had changed.I decided to capitalize some letters to portray the tone used in some quotes.I underlined some parts of the text to highlight seriousness. I also kept in mind the line length when planning for different screen sizes.I controlled the width of the container to ensure that the lines of text weren't too short or spanning across the entire width of the page.
